Natural methods

These methods involve using some means of finding out when you are at your most fertile days in your cycle, so that you take extra care or avoid sex altogether at these times. They rely on looking for signs of ovulation including changes to the slipperiness of mucus produced by the cervix and an increase in temperature after ovulation.

How effective are they?

Reliability: > 99% effective if used correctly and consistently, but more typically can be as low as 75%

What are the advantages?

It is a natural alternative to barrier methods and to hormonal methods acting on the natural hormone and fertility cycle.

What are the disadvantages?

It is a method of contraception which requires a lot of motivation and commitment from both partners. It is advisable to consult a natural family planning expert if wishing to learn to use this method. . Since intercourse is not allowed during the fertile days, your sex life may be impaired. Natural methods also do not protect against STIs.
